Wednesday Wisdom: Stephen King On Getting Started
Wednesday Wisdom is a weekly feature aimed at giving you some motivation in the middle of the week. This week’s wisdom comes to us from author Stephen King.
We’ve all been there. You’re afraid to start something new, and you dread the day when it finally arrives. Perhaps it’s a new job, the first day of school, or a big project. We spend so much time worrying about, thinking about all of the things that are going to go wrong.
However, all of the terrible things that occurred in our heads never actually happen. We start our new thing, and find that it gets easier as it goes along. You make friends at school. You form a routine at your new job and settle in. Now that thing you dreaded doesn’t seem so scary, and is just another part of your life. It’s this experience – one we all face – that author Stephen King gives us some advice about.
Stephen King On Getting Started
In today’ quote – which comes from Stephen King’s book On Writing – tells us that the scariest moment we experience is always just before we get started. It’s that moment when you’re about to walk into the new job, or getting on the bus for your first day. It’s that moment right before you finally plunge yourself in and just begin. Once you do that, the fear slowly starts to slip away.
We’ve all experienced this fear, and for many of us, it’s holding us back. Perhaps there is a project that you want to work on, but you’re too afraid to get started. King has been there, facing it every time he is about to start a new novel. But he pushes through, and as always, finds that he is able to conquer that fear by just starting.
So the next time you are about to begin something, and you think that feeling of fear is going to last throughout, remember that you’re in the middle of the hardest part. Things will get better as you go along, as long as you just get started.
